Won't the drama add to the excitement on ice, 'squeeky clean' Eugene?

For the bullet summary, please go here.

This guy’s no patsy! He’s not NHL material!

‘Jim, you have poor character! Jim, didn’t you hear us? You have poor character. Jim! Won’t you listen to us? Come on man, get it through your head, your character is poor. Poor Jim, poor! Aren’t you listening? See we told you. Jim doesn’t listen. That’s cause he is of poor character.’

‘ We tried time and again to ask Jim to play by the league’s rules. But, he just wants to do his own thing. He keeps wanting to move this team, or that team, or any team to Southern Ontario. That is not what is approved by the NHL, and that makes Jim in violation of league processes.

See, that means Jim is of poor character. Would somebody please stop this guy, already!’

‘Oh, give me a home, where the buffalo roam, and the skies are not cloudy all day.’

If the fights going on at the ownership level, spill out on the ice, the NHL may just have a chance at survival!  Don Cherry was right!  There will always be fighting in hockey! It’s part of the game!

Didn’t you hear?

The NHL’s Board of Governors is all one big happy family. Look at the smiles on the faces of the representatives on the BOG. Look, they are smiling. No, that IS a smile, not a forced grimace. It IS a smile, OK?

Bring on Canuck # 2 to show Jim how unpatriotic he is for fighting for hockey in Canada! Yes, if Anthony Leblanc and his ‘Canadians are snapping up real estate in Arizona by the hundreds’ wasn’t enough Canadian guilt, let’s bring on another. Are ya crackin’ yet Jim! Didn’t you learn from Anthony?

Do ya need more ‘dilithium Crystals’…..’Cap’n she’s breaking up, I don’t know how much longer I can keep her going’!

Wow!

Can anybody give this Canadian a break! I am talking about me. For that matter, can anybody give another Canadian a break. This time I am talking about Jim Balsille.

Eugene Melnyk, the owner of the Senators felt sorry for Jim before, but is just mad as heck at him now. Melnyk says Jim thinks he should not be the owner of the Senators. Is that it?

Mr. Melnyk, since you like writing direct letters aired in public. How about I send you one?

Ok,here goes….

Dear Eugene:

Can I call you squeeky? Or how about, Squeeky Clean Eugene? Does that sound about right? Can’t dig up any muck on you so it must be true. Unlike your friends, who seem to have muck all over them.

'Squeeky clean' Eugene Melnyk

'Squeeky clean' Eugene Melnyk

First off, do any of your horses race at the tracks of Jeremy Jacobs? Just askin’. After all, when you are in the horse business like Jacobs, it would become a ‘nagging’ question, whether you and he would be in that club together too. Small world, and all that. That wouldn’t have anything to do with you supporting the BOG, and not supporting Balisillie would it?

Did your ‘horsing around’ get you an easier ticket to the NHL winners circle?

The way this club works, you need to have connections outside hockey as we are learning. So, I hope you don’t mind the questions related to the whole horse thing.

You felt sorry for Jim Balsillie when you figured he had a snowballs chance in Barbados to survive his bid to own a team.

You know Barbados?

Of course you do, you live there and don’t pay the great Canadian income taxes the rest of us Canadians pay. Isn’t that right, Mr. Great Canadian?

Isn’t it ironic, the closer you get to Ottawa, the less taxes you pay? Do you know Brian Mulroney by any chance? Just askin’ again.

OK, so you felt sorry for Jim Balsillie for what exactly? That he couldn’t put a team where most of us Canadians that want to see pro hockey live? Is that it? Would it have been OK with you, had he bought a team, and left it where he was supposed to leave it? Would that have been OK with you Mr. Melnyk?

Well, Eugene, how do you feel about the Phoenix Coyotes? Do you think they deserve to stay in Phoenix? Do you think Jerry Reinsdorf is the best owner for them? How do you feel about the concession demands he has for the taxpayers of Phoenix? You do remember taxes don’t you? Ya, well how do you feel about the taxpayers having to foot the bill for lots of hockey that they really don’t want, when the City of Glendale could easily change the hockey spots for other events, likely more than making up lost hockey revenue? How do you feel about that?

Or, how do you feel about the fact that Jerry Reinsdorf wants an out clause, where he and your other friends at the NHL can pretend to care about Phoenix, all the while, laughing and waiting to say, ‘oh well Phoenix, sorry, moving now’. Does that sound like a move of good character to you?

Mr. Melnyk. With all due respect, to accuse Jim Balsillie of poor character is the pot calling the kettle black, at the very least.

If Jim Balsillie was truly of poor character, the NHL Board of Governors should welcome him with open arms, as he would fit right in.

Tit for tat? Who gives a rat’s butt? Really!

This isn’t about liking or having to like anybody. This is a businessman buying an asset. He is helping another businessman sell the asset.

But I have to tell you. I would really like to know how you ‘cracked the lineup’ to get into this good boys club.

Is this club like the movie, Stepford Wives. Toe the line, keep the smile, and play by all the rules like you have no value or opinion of your own? Is that what it means to get into this club?

All I have seen so far myself is a steady stream of proof, showing corruption, greed, collusion, and networking, that has everything to do with unfair business practices. Keep rubbing your friends back and he’ll give you something back.

Well, Mr. Melnyk (who lives in Barbados and avoids true Canadian taxes), you profess to be the wonderful Canadian?

Where was your support of Mr. Balsillie before he pointed out your faults? He did so to prove nobody is perfect. You can thank the NHL for dragging you in the mud. They set this up with their accusations of poor character.

I hope your hockey team is a little tougher in spirit than you seem to be.

Eugene, the way I see it. Jim Balsillie is a man of integrity. He sees what is wrong, and he is using the court to try to crack a lineup that he doesn’t have to like. He doesn’t have to be ‘friends’ with. He just needs to get on the inside, give hockey back to Canada where it belongs.

Eugene, maybe Jim is just trying to say he is no different than you, and deserves a team too.

Does he care if he is liked in the process? Heck no, and why should he?

This is ‘Go to the mattresses time’. It’s business. Nothing more. Just business.

At least I'm in....Sorry about your luck fellow Canuck!

At least I'm in....Sorry about your luck fellow Canuck!

And, I would suspect Jim Balsillie, who is a Canadian living in Canada, contributes to the income tax pool of this country. Bad, bad, man!

And to think, you could probably walk your tax return to Parliament Hill in Ottawa before or after the Senators play. Tsk tsk tsk!

Sell more tickets and suites, the $48,000 advice from Beacon Sports

For the bullet summary, please go here.

Had the City of Glendale gotten ‘Smart’, they could have avoided ‘Kaos’

Did you know that Beacon Capital Partners had an office in France? No? Neither did I.

That is, until they came to visit the site at approximately 5 AM in the morning our time (EST), and 2 AM (PST) in Los Angeles.

Here is the visit, without the IP address showing of course:

What is equally important is that there were several key hits surrounding this visit from a couple of IP addresses located in Los Angeles and Texas. I have been tracking these IP’s and noticed a pattern of visits at specific times in the past.

Could it be a coincidence? It becomes less likely, considering the hits were from two IP adddresses in LA and Texas, in roughly the same time frame as the visit from Beacon Capital. And, it was 2 AM Los Angeles time.

Time for the City of Glendale to spend the big bucks, and 'Get Smart'

Time for the City of Glendale to 'Get Smart' and avoid further 'Kaos'

The point to be made here is, although unprovable with the information in it’s current form, it might suggest a conference call or discussion. Remember, these were not just any random IP locations, they have been watched over several weeks.

So, could there have been a discussion of the Leventhal connection between Beacon in France and parties in Los Angeles and Texas? Yes, it would seem possible.

Why would it occur?

Well, if we remember the players in the Glendale saga, we would recall that Leventhal was brought in by Michael Reinsdorf to assess the Jobing.com arena for the City of Glendale. The cost, as reported was $48,000, and it was reported this amount could be paid and more importantly without having to raise eyebrows. The Phoenix New Times did an excellent article to explain this in better detail:

In the fall of 2008, Coyotes owners Jeff Shumway and Jerry Moyes began explaining to City Manager Beasley just how bad the team’s financial situation was. They asked the city to sweeten the pot and give them incentives to help the team stay in Glendale.

Instead, in October, Beasley inked a deal with a small Massachusetts firm, Beacon Sports Capital Management. (Because Beasley kept the contract below $50,000, he didn’t need the city council’s involvement. To date, Beacon has come in just under the threshold, at $48,175.)

It has also been suggested that working for the City on Hockey is a way in the door to perhaps other opportunities.

We had tied Alan Leventhal to MSD Capital in previous articles, and because he is an expert in REIT’s (Real Estate Investment Trusts) it would make sense from a ‘come on over’ perspective that Michael Reinsdorf and Michael Dell would have interest in Leventhal.

We must remember that International Facilities Group (IFG) run by Michael Reinsdorf has been shown to be lease and sports facility experts. That includes experts in the area of ‘how to run your facility effectively’. This begs the question to Reinsdorf. Why bring in a competitor that does the same thing?  Would this explain the ‘real money’ is in the relationships and the land investment opportunities, not sports facility management, or owning the Coyotes for that matter? Consistentcy has been in this argument. All the pieces that are fitting into the puzzle to date have supported this.

So, again, if this blog was so far off the mark, why would we have folks in Los Angeles, up at 2AM potentially discussing the Leventhal connection with Beacon Capital in France?

Let’s face it! There is truth to what is being uncovered. There is concern for the ripple effect this uncovering of truth is going to have.

There has also been a significant activity from the same Los Angeles IP addresses to the article on ‘ The taxpayers of Glendale deserving full disclosure’. That too is obvious if you were someone involved with land sales tax gift subsidies, as in the CityNorth Phoenix area. That would be Related Companies. We know that Michael Dell has decided to invest, and has taken at least a 7% equity stake to date in this company, with promise of investing more on a case by case basis, as the opportunity arises. I think it is fair to say there is plenty of past land investment activity from MSD Capital, coupled with this venture to suggest it is a strategy for MSD moving forward.

Now, onto the advice that cost $48,000 from Beacon Sports Capital. Let’s make sure we don’t confuse that with Beacon Capital Partners, the REIT arm of Leventhal.

In this article, entitled the Yotes Notes, way at the bottom there was some pretty significant suggestions reported. But, let’s first take note of the timeframe:

The first document is a letter from Beacon Sports Capital Partners, LLC to City Manager Ed Beasley dated January 21, 2009.

Now, let’s look at some pretty obvious, why didn’t we think of that, advice that Beacon added:

The letter also recommended revenue opportunities, which include:

  • Expanding local broadcast revenue.
  • Increasing non-hockey events at the arena from the current 30 to 35, to approximately 104 to 106.
  • Additional suite sales
  • Increasing sponsorship and advertising sales.
  • Increasing ticket sales.

A letter summarizing these recommendations was sent to John Kaites on April 15, 2009, a little less then one month before Moyes put the Coyotes into bankruptcy.

I must state the obvious. Did anybody compare notes with Jerry Moyes? Because, in the same six month timeframe, Jerry and Gretzky were busy too. Again, too bad they didn’t ask Moyes what they tried to do. Might have saved them at least in part, some of the $48,000 of easy money.

From the National Post, here is an excerpt to explain:

In a Sunday interview with KSAZ, the FOX Phoenix affiliate, Moyes said he had worked for six months to find an owner willing to keep the team in suburban Glendale. Wayne Gretzky and minority owner John Breslow were part of one drive, where the aim was to find up to 11 investors each willing to part with US$20-million.

“Somebody has got to put in US$200-to-$220-million of capital into this team for it to be viable – plus, having a major contribution from the city of Glendale, of US$15-to-$20-million,” Moyes said. “If we would have gotten those two things accomplished, we probably could have had a plan to keep it in Glendale.”

Jerry Moyes, said in the television interview, that they had been working toward the obvious desire to sell suites, to increase corporate sponsorship, etc.

Wow Beacon, are you kidding us? You are suggesting the need to sell more suites and tickets? Do ya think? And, this advice cost the taxpayers of Glendale how much exactly?

And, please note Jerry Moyes’ comment in the interview that the hockey revenue could be more than compensated for with increased concerts and other activities. Perhaps the same increase Beacon suggested from 35 to 104? Yep, that would certainly increase revenues all right!

If there could have been more suites and tickets sold, don’t you think that would have been done under the Gretzky Project? Or, did you not know about what had already been done

Probably used the 'Cones of Silence' so nobody caught on

Do you think they have the 'Cones of Silence' at City Hall in Glendale?

because, oh, let me guess, you didn’t want to tell Jerry Moyes of the ‘double secret’ mission you were on to give advice to Glendale behind the current owner’s back? I’m sure you used the ‘cones of silence’ too, eh? A useful tool in the show, Get Smart.

And Glendale, of course you wouldn’t talk with Jerry Moyes or Gretzky about it, because you were doing a secret investigation with Leventhal and Beacon, right?

Let me put this bluntly, City of Glendale. You had an obligation to the existitng team and it’s owner, and you ignored him. That, in the nicest way possible is ‘negligence’.

But, could this be explained by the fact that what the City of Glendale needed above all was infrastructure growth, tax base increase, taxes paid, and influx of residents. I guess they figured Jerry Moyes couldn’t do what they really needed.

And, this takes us back to the original reason the arena was built. When the mayor said it was a business decision. And that she expected a lot of infrastructure growth.

The same problem Tom Hicks has had in the Victory Project in Dallas.

But, to the court and the lawyers, the problems the City of Glendale has should not be the problem of a hockey team owner, leasing space at Jobing.com arena, crying for help.

This lesson will be learned. You can go to one of Jeremy Jacobs casinos and place a wager on that!

All this Kaos? Could have been avoided!

Have 'concessions' biased the opinion of the Chairman of the NHL's Board of Governors?

For the bullet summary, please go here

Have conflicts of interest tainted the vote against Jim Balsillie as a proposed owner for the NHL?

Did the vote literally go to the ‘dogs’?

What if the Board of Governors had to revote on the eligibility issue? Would it go something like this?

Jacobs: OK, we have to do this thing over, because of some crazy rules they gave us….to make it easier, please just raise your hand if you think you DO NOT have a conflict of interest…….anybody?……….no?………….What do we do now?…..They didn’t tell us what to do if this happened…….

I must thank a fellow Hamiltonian (please see the about section) for bringing to my attention Jeremy Jacobs, owner of the Boston Bruins. Jacobs is the Chairman of the NHL Board of Governors.

Could Jeremy Jacobs really vote against client Jerry Reinsdorf?

Could Jeremy Jacobs really vote against client Jerry Reinsdorf?

Mr. Jacobs is not only the owner of the Boston Bruins, but he operates a concession  and gaming company that provides the catering to many major league baseball stadiums, NHL arenas, and other venues,  named Delaware North.  He has parlayed his business into a multi billion dollar empire.

As we have seen time and again, in order to get ahead, you must network. Sometimes you have to be a little bit shrewd it would seem. Well, in the news now, Jeremy Jacobs is in a court battle with ex partners over a Buffalo casino opportunity. I won’t get in specifics, but suffice it to say that there are allegations of using information from the old partnership in order to get unfair advantage in negotiations direct with the powers that be. You can read the article on this lawsuit here. But, here is the skinny:
Delaware North took confidential information and used it against former partners in its bid to develop a major casino at a downstate racetrack, its former partner alleges in a new lawsuit.

As I have been told, it’s a dog eat dog world . It’s just business. Nothing personal, just business. Sounds like the book tycoon in the movie, ‘You’ve Got Mail’. ‘Go to the mattresses!

A friend told me that very rich people in business think differently than you and I. They are in a league all their own. Well, that may be true, but if getting ahead means operating unfairly, that’s when I have a problem, I don’t know about you.

But when you are in a position on a Board, you should and really must put personal ties aside. You must be impartial and fair. This is the issue. This is the question. How could there have been a unanimous ‘NO’ vote against Jim Balsillie as a potential owner? The reason: Poor character?

Well, again, you would hope that as a member of the NHL Board of Governors, the members would take their roles seriously. And, in doing so, you would hope that every consideration would be looked upon with non-biased eyes.
So, if a new, proposed owner should be introduced as a candidate to be approved, you would hope that his application would be fairly treated. Why is Jeremy Jacobs leading the fight against the RIM boss, whose company is claimed by Forbes to be one of the world’s fastest growing, and most succesful successes of all time?

My fellow Hamiltonian friend mentioned Jeremy Jacobs related to the issue of the court case. But, I have a sneaking suspicion he knew of a bigger issue related to the case against Jim Balsillie. He may deny it, but, I would say he is a wise man. He is just letting me present it to you.

It would seem that we have a pattern brewing here, as we dig deeper into the relationships that seem to intertwine amongst the members of the NHL Board of Governors. Relationships that seem to transcend one sport, and spill into others. And, as we have seen already with Tom Hicks, it can even cross industry, and potentially goes into land development as well.

Without reiterating the obvious, the Phoenix Coyotes case is all about land development and opportunities that surround it, almost making hockey operations a ‘loss leader’ to get to the true prize that exists with deals with government.

Tom Hicks has benefited from such arrangement with his Dallas development, Victory Park.

As mentioned in the title of this article, Jeremy Jacobs may have had a hard time being fair to Jim Balsillie, as he supplies refreshment services to many major league ballparks including the one that hosts the Chicago White Sox.
So, put simply, if Jacobs had a choice of choosing Jerry Reinsdorf, a client, or Jim Balsillie (his competitor for the team), which one would he choose? And, more importantly, is there any way he’d be able to put aside his business interests in order to be fair? It would not seem likely.

So, we have looked at the chairman here, and the vice chairman of the NHL Board of Governors, and we can see that relationships most likely have gotten in the way of fair assessment of Jim Balsillie.

Let’s hope the bankruptcy court, and Judge Baum will ensure that there is no further bias against Jim Balsillie, as he determines what is truly fair. It would seem the relationships run fairly deep. More importantly, these relationships seem to have biased at least some members of the Board of Governors, possible quite a few more.

The boys on the NHL’s  BOG seem to have quite a ‘good boys club’ going. Isn’t it high time to crack that lineup?
When 'fairness' doesn't stand a 'dog gone chance'

When 'fairness' doesn't stand a 'dog gone chance'

Conflicts of interest? It would appear ‘black and white’ in this one.

And, if it is indeed a dog eat dog world, it would seem that Jacobs wants to ensure the dog being eaten at Chicago White Sox games continues to be supplied by his company.
Next article: With the court reconvening two weeks today on some outstanding issues, there are folks staying up late listening to others ‘beacon-ing’ off! It seems there are lots of people busy to come to terms and get prepared for what comes next!

Brian Mulroney and Tom Hicks relationship

Well,

Small world or what?

What does Tom Hicks, owner of the Dallas Stars and Texas Rangers have in common with ex prime Minister of Canada, Brian Mulroney?

Well, look at this muckety map.

Mulroney is a director of Hicks Acquisition Company, Inc. and Hicks is founder and chairman.

Just goes to show you, is it possible Canada in general supports and benefits from political ties to the powerful in the U.S.A.? Certainly seems like it.

So, are we to continue to wonder why Canada doesn’t seem to lend a hand to help Jim Balsillie acquire one of two teams lost to the U.S.?

Looking clear as muck to me.

Are we selling out six ways from Sunday?

You be the judge.

What do Hicks and Moyes have in common? Perhaps we should ask the NHL!

For the bullet summary, please go here.

Power! It’s a wonderful thing. How do you get it? Why not ask former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney?

Tom Hicks  is the vice-chairman of the National Hockey League’s Board of Governors. He is also the owner of the Texas Rangers Baseball Club.

Tom Hicks and Jerry Reinsdorf share interest in Major League Baseball, and they also own teams. At least, Hicks still technically has a hold of the Texas Rangers.

You see, Hicks’ sports holding company, Hicks Sports Group is in default.

Where Major League Baseball will likely play by fair rules and strip ownership, the story in the NHL office is a little different.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the NHL is protecting Hicks’ interest in the Stars, where the MLB isn’t:

That won’t happen for at least 180 days, however, as lenders have agreed to National Hockey League provisions that prevent immediate foreclosure. Major League Baseball’s rules for such situations are more fluid, though if Hicks Sports Group can’t satisfy lenders, the lenders can eventually force an MLB-sanctioned sale of the Rangers.

You see, when you are the Vice-Chairman of the NHL, I suppose like an American Express card, that kind of stature ‘has it’s priviledges’.

Unlike Jerry Moyes, Tom Hicks has been in trouble for months, but you don’t see the NHL handing over proxies to strip him of any control, do you? Oh contraire, quite the opposite is occuring it would seem.

And the WSJ adds just how far ‘to bat’ the NHL will go on this one for Hicks:

A spokesman for NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman declined to comment. Bob DuPuy, chief operating officer of Major League Baseball, also declined to comment.

Relations between the Hicks Sports Group lenders and the NHL have grown increasingly testy of late, with the NHL threatening to do all it could to block a forced sale of the Stars, according to people involved in the matter.

Will Gary Bettman spare Tom Hicks from ‘embarassment’ as he professed to do for Jerry Moyes?

It would seem there are different sets of rules depending on who you are. At least baseball doesn’t have the same bias.

Well, let’s have a look, shall we.

Remember, Jerry Reinsdorf was approved by Hicks as a good choice of owner. Would Hicks know Reinsdorf having  shared owning positions in the MLB? Probably.

Would Hicks have known Reinsdorf when they fundraised for John McCain in the 2008 Presidential Campaign?  Good chance.

And, isn’t it a coincidence that Tom Hicks is also a land developer? My word!

Yes, according to the Dallas Stars website on Hicks:

An Empty Victory: When urban planning fails to live up to expectations

An Empty Victory: When urban planning fails to live up to expectations

Hicks Holdings is a partner with Hillwood Development Company in the Victory Park project in downtown Dallas.  Hicks Holdings is a developer of a 75-acre urban town center /multi-use development on the land adjacent to the Rangers Ballpark in Arlington; and of Champions Park, a 40-acre office/retail development in Frisco, Texas

And, if we look at the reasons that Dallas originally decided on the Victory Park project, check out the similarity in thinking to that of Glendale. Downright scary:

Having for a long time failed to populate its dowtown with any residents, the city made a concerted effort (i.e. gave lots of tax incentives) to refurbish and even repurpose vacant office buildings into top-of-the-line apartments and condominiums. It even subsidized a neighborhood grocery store to get residents to stay. Yet these efforts were modest compared to one of the largest new mixed-use developments just outside the central business district Victory Park.

Well, how did Victory Park do? Probably best described by the same blogger:

Now, only a few years later, Victory Park seems to embody at the local level the wreckage of the global real-estate bust. The trendy restaurants have been shutting down one by one, the public plaza feels like a ghost town when basketball and hockey games are not taking place at the arena. Most of the shops have closed their doors and many residential units remains unsold. Another major hotel flag backed out of the project, leaving a large parcel at the center of the development undevelopped, undermining viability of the planned street blocks. The local television newscast still broadcasts from Victory, but struggles to show an outdoor shot for a constant lack of pedestrians. Despite civic groups’ efforts to stage rallies, awards ceremonies, film festivals and new year’s parties, Victory continues to fail as a favorite place to congregate.of t

Sounds a lot like the thinking of Glendale. Any coincidence that sports ownership and land development goes hand in hand in places outside of Glendale?

Any coincindence that there could be strong support by the vice-Chairman of the NHL to a man like Jerry Reinsdorf, with likely relationship formed over several years?

What chance would a man like Jim Balsillie have? Does he own an MLB team? Did he fundraise for John McCain? Is he involved in land or sports arena development?

For that matter, what chance did Jerry Moyes have? He wasn’t in the same kind of ventures some others in sports are.

Where Hicks gets six months reprieve from the NHL, Jerry Moyes got six months of takeover planning behind his back. Where Hicks gets 180 days to find more investors, Jerry Moyes got to sign proxies giving up his rights. At least, that’s what Gary Bettman thought.

But, don’t feel sorry for Hicks. He is looking to make an acquisition in the $billions for a packaging company. It would seem he has decided to stop flooding his wealth into the hockey and baseball teams to bail them out, and didn’t pay his $10 million payment.

When you have lots of wealth and power, you can pick and choose, and make some people wait.

And, it would appear Gary Bettman wants to continue to be accomodating to Hicks, because after all, Hicks could likely have pull enough to control the fate of Bettman in the NHL office . No wonder Mr. B is so helpful and supportive.

Ah, power! Ain’t it grande?

So, when we ask ourselves if the vote for Reinsdorf and the overwhelming denial of Jim Balsillie was fair, we only need to look at the relationships and the associated ‘treatment’ a friend gets, and the poor treatment one not as connected receives.

How are things in the back pocket of Mr.Hicks, Gary?

Fair for Moyes or Balsillie? Please!

oOn a Saturday in January, a little after midnight, there are only a few people milling about Perot’s district. Most of them are headed to the Ghostbar, one of the few places that hasn’t shut down for the night. At the AT&T Plaza, the heart of Victory Park that fronts the southern edge of AAC, two mammoth super screens blare a series of artsy images to a crowd of, well, no one.  Billed as “one of the largest outdoor digital mediums in the world,” the screens were supposed to be a landmark attraction in the glamorous development. Now they just seem a once-coveted Christmas gift tossed awkwardly aside.ry Pa The brainchild of Ross Perot Jr. (the son of the former presidential candidate), Victory was advertised as the the premier masterplanned urban community, designed for the on-the-go single professional who desired place to live, work, shop and play. Anchored by a state-of-the-art basketball arena and a luxury condo-hotel, Victory was going to be a district defined by high-rise apartments, fashionable street retail, trendy restaurants, and a public plaza surrounded by gigantic and moving digital projections. Apparently, what Dallas needed was an instant Times Square, complete with a glassed-in television studio at the corner to highlight the crowded pedestrian-filled sidewalks that are common in the city (…uh huh). After an early flirtation with a low-rise, historicist architectural theme, it was decided for this district to appear distincitively contemporary, with multiple glass skyscrapers of at least 25 stories, bamboo landscaping and reflecting pools with clean edges.

OK, what is so interesting about the 'done like dinner reheated' article?

For the bullet summary, please go here.

Hard to feel sorry for any involvement that anybody might have in the Phoenix Coyotes fiasco. It is also hard to feel sorry if it has ruffled a few feathers in the process.

We have held from day 1 that something was quite wrong in the treatment of Jerry Moyes  by the parties surrounding the bankruptcy case.

Now, it would seem we have intense interest in the latest article posted, on Club Collusion.

Ask yourself a very important question. If I was just a blogger out in left field that didn’t know what in the heck I was talking about, how would I continue to command a little bit of attention from the company that seems pivotal in this case.

Again, sorry! It is very hard to feel sorry for anybody that was less than accomodating to the needs of Jerry Moyes!

I have removed IP addresses from the following for privacy purposes. Why the attention? We all need to ask that question!

It’s high time to stop this charade, and for the parties to this case to come clean, come forward, and do the right thing. Us Canadians are getting fed up with the shenanigans in the desert.

Time to pay Jerry Moyes what he is owed, and move the Coyotes to a destination that will support the team the way it should be supported. Fill Jobing.com arena with events that interest the people, and don’t subsidize a hockey team that the taxpayers are overwhelmingly against supporting.

And finally, if you are involved in lucrative gifts from government in Arizona on land development, truly ask yourself if it is justified to charge close to $500,000 for someone to park their smartcar!

Tim Horton – a Legend in Hockey not just coffee!

When Hockey was magical- Part 1: Tim Horton

Tim Horton

What would Tim say about the game today?

With all the changes taking place in the game of hockey, many of us are left wondering ‘what happened’ to our game. Are we to lose the memories of what hockey means to Canada, as we build ‘super suites’ to attract corporate big wigs? Are we going to be able to convey the magic to our children, and their children?

Or, as reported, are fewer and fewer Canadians interested in the game?

As kids, at Christmas, every year we would get a new road hockey net. You might recall the phone calls to your friends, “Did you get it? Yep, you? Yep! See you outside in 20 minutes?”

Every day after school, game upon game was being played on streets. Sometimes you could see three or four games going on at the same time. All kids were outside playing, even when the parents wanted them in to learn the mathematical times tables. “But ma, the kids are already starting to play!”

When hockey was hockey. How we all want to remember the game, and it’s heroes. We must try to recall the history, and the players that we admired.

For those of you that don’t know who Tim Horton really was, here is a very interesting video.

                               httpvh://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4_K2e9hves

Tim Horton opened the first Tim Horton Donut Shop in Hamilton in 1964, on Ottawa Street.

As mentioned in the video, Johnny Bower and others were paid $25 for four hours work, signing autographs outside the store when it first opened. This, in an attempt to draw customers. Well, suffice it to say, the customers just keep on coming!

The store, as seen in this photo, is of course modernized, but still stands. Complete with pictures of Tim Horton on the walls, it is

A modernized original location on Ottawa St, Hamilton

A modernized original location on Ottawa St, Hamilton

a reminder of a hockey hero and legend. Tim Horton restaurants are a reminder of what it is to be Canadian. And to tie cold hockey weather in with a warm cup of coffee or hot chocolate from Tims has been a hockey lovers reality for many years.

Many families can recall hockey tournaments with their kids, and the importing of Tim Hortons to other thirsty parents by the nice man making the ‘coffee run’.

Hamilton has deep roots in hockey in Canada, and would not be a stranger to hosting an NHL hockey team, yet again.

I’m sure Tim Horton would be proud to know his town was granted a team, after many years of being without. And, I’m sure the new Copps Colliseum would host a pretty impressive Tim Horton location too.
